How to make 3-ingredient shortbread cookies:

Start by melting the butter—just pop it into a microwave-safe bowl and heat it for about 30 to 60 seconds until it’s fully melted. Once that’s done, mix the melted butter with sugar until the mixture becomes light and fluffy. Add the flour next and mix until the dough starts to come together, forming a soft texture.

Now, it’s time to form the dough. Lightly flour a flat surface and roll the dough into a ball. Wrap the ball in plastic wrap and refrigerate it for at least 1 hour—this will help the dough firm up and make it easier to cut.

After the dough has chilled, take it out and roll or flatten it to about 1/4″ to 1/2″ thick. Use cookie cutters to cut out your shapes—heart-shaped cutters are always fun, but feel free to get creative! Place your shaped dough on a cookie sheet, and then pop the sheet back into the fridge while you preheat the oven to 325°F (160°C).

Once the oven is ready, take the cookie-filled sheet from the fridge and bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown. After baking, let the cookies cool completely, then add any toppings you like—sprinkles, icing, or a dusting of powdered sugar. Finally, dig in and enjoy these sweet treats. Ingredients

  • 1 Cup 1 Salted butter

  • 1/2 Cup 1/2 Powdered sugar

  • 2 Cups 2 All purpose flour

  • Melt the Butter
    Place butter in a microwave-safe bowl.
    Microwave for 30-60 seconds until fully melted.
  • Mix the Ingredients
    Mix melted butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
    Add flour and mix until the dough starts to come together.
  • Forming the Dough
    Use a lightly floured, flat surface and roll the dough into a ball.
    Wrap the ball in plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
  • Cutting out the Cookies
    Roll/flatten the dough till about 1/4″ to 1/2″ thick.
    Cut out shapes with cookie cutters. We used these heart shaped cookie cutters*.
    Place on a cookie sheet and place back into the refrigerator while the oven heats.
  • Bake the Cookies
    Pre-heat the oven to 325°F (160°C)
    Take cookie filled cookie sheet from the refrigerator to the middle oven shelf and bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until edges golden.
  • Enjoy the Cookies
    Let cookies cool then add any desired toppings.
